First ATA Award for Excellence given for an online exhibit
Observations from the ATA Award for Excellence Juror, Anne Mitchell Reid
I would like to select two pieces. First the tapestry by Terry Olson “Wilsonville Bridge over the Willamette River, 1960.” I loved that although the foreground is broken into two dimensional patterns, the perspective still really works. It is lovely to look at from a distance, and I imagine coming into an exhibition, seeing it from afar and being really drawn to go and explore it close up. It is well woven, and I really liked the use of colour. The mountain in the distance is really effective!
Secondly, I have selected Pat Price’s “Steel Bridge”. It took great skill, using a simple technique and limited palette to create this lovely image. There is just enough stylization for us to enjoy the patterns but still recognize subject matter. Nice clear edges too!
I would also like to commend Kiki Dembrow on the way she managed to have two contrasting images in the tapestry but still made the whole work, and Pam Patrie, Kevynne Layne and Patricia Bugas-Schramm for their nicely woven skies!
I hope you are all happy with my choices and my comments. It is so good to see such an active group of tapestry weavers producing quality work!
With best wishes for your future endeavors,
Sincerely
Anne Mitchell Reid
