Becky Smith
Becky Smith is an emerging tapestry artist, finding her voice in the process of exploration, study, and invention. She began weaving in 1971 at the Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene, OR, taught fiber arts at a private high school for 6 years, and has since continued to weave, spin, knit, and dye natural fibers. She returned to tapestry weaving in 2019, took a class at Damascus Fiber Arts School in 2021 and soon became
an active volunteer.
Inspired by the community of weavers at the Damascus Fiber Arts School and by the natural world, especially the rivers and trees near her home, her work has been shown locally and nationally since 2023. She currently teaches at the Damascus Fiber Arts School, and is a member of the American Tapestry Alliance and Willamette Tapestry Artists.

Artist Statement
From the first, weaving has felt magical, and I can no longer imagine not weaving. I often see the lines, patterns, and colors all around as potential tapestries. Within tapestry I have four concurrent practices: exploration, study, small pieces, and works to share. Exploration satisfies my need to learn. Study takes me deeper into a technique or idea. Small pieces allow me to see progress and execute more ideas. Works for
sharing develop my skill in design and execution.
