Patricia Bugas-Schramm

Over forty years ago Patricia Bugas-Schramm found weaving in Eugene Oregon. Patricia learned to weave functional things (clothing, upholstery, curtains) from Maureen McNulty at Northwest Wools and from Dodie Gannett at Damascus Pioneer Craft School. Patricia transitioned from weaving images on a floor loom using the Theo Moorman supplementary weft technique to pure tapestry in 1995.  Since then, Patricia has studied tapestry with Audrey Moore and Terry Olson as a member of the Damascus Fiber Arts School community.

Patricia is a former board member of the Portland Handweavers Guild.  She is a member of the American Tapestry Alliance and a founding member of Willamette Tapestry Artists.

Artist Statement

My tapestry reflects the Pacific Northwest coastal environment. I grew up surrounded with the images of the Columbia River and Pacific Ocean fisheries, rough ocean seas, Douglas fir forests, ocean going shipping and molten skies of gray found in the Lower Columbia River Basin.

A cartoon informs my weaving process, but the yarn size and serendipity of what pleases create the final image. The slow process of interlacing color-saturated yarn focuses attention. I find weaving a series helps refine and simplify the many ideas and colors I want to explore.

Since I was a little girl, I could be found with yarn in my hand; my internal voice responds to the magic of fiber. I love how the woven image of tapestry advances from bobbins filled with wool, bottom to top, and the fact that so many have gone before me doing this same thing.
