Dancing Salmon
Patricia Bugas-Schramm
Cotton warp, wool weft
“Dancing Salmon” reflects the influence my teacher, Audrey Moore, had on freeing my artistic voice. Audrey’s passion for Native American art and culture parallels my attraction to NW Coast carved and woven images. With a friend I dyed the teal yarn used in the waves that represent the Columbia River. The waves contain the salmon gill motif woven in Klickitat baskets. Northwest Coast salmon carved by Haida Glen Rabena inspired the woven salmon. Soumak outlines these black, red and white native fish as they move upriver in a never-ending dance, celebrating life.
