Fremont Bridge

2023
8" x 8.5", 12" x12" mounted
Cotton warp, wool weft
Driving across the Fremont Bridge, I was inspired by the structure’s arches, cables and triangle supports set against the blue sky. I carefully snapped a photo and planned to weave a tapestry just as it appeared in my photo, using only black, white and shades of grey with a red border.
I did not start it right away, and over time I became less and less enthused with my design and color choices. About a year later I considered the design again. I was inspired by Don Burns’ work to “abstract” my design and enliven it with bright colors.
I am happy with the outcome which has planted a seed of an idea to create a tapestry series: Four Seasons of the Fremont Bridge.
