Cotton warp, wool weft

Audrey Moore was a gifted tapestry artist, a wise and encouraging teacher, and above all, she was a warm and welcoming person. Her spirit is very much apparent in the atmosphere at Damascus Fiber Arts School, the school she ran for many years and the place where I learn and love tapestry.
Audrey’s Ladies series portray ladies’ costumes as the focus. Woven borders surround many, and some of the costumes extend beyond the borders. I am reminded of the sparkle in Audrey’s eyes and imagine that she is demonstrating that tapestry is more than two-dimensional warp and weft. There is depth and meaning and a bit of mystery.
I was inspired to create The Lady Wore Denim to honor Audrey. I chose to weave a denim shirt, a nod to what Audrey would often wear to class. I included elements from her tapestries, the border which cannot completely hold the shirt, the vivid color, and the use of buttons. If Audrey could have seen it in progress, I think she would say “That’s Great!” and then lovingly offer suggestions of how to fix flaws, and encouragingly add, “What will you weave next?”
