I met Audrey while taking a tapestry weaving class in 2018 at Damascus Fiber Arts School (DFAS). I was fascinated to find out she was one of the original founders of the Pioneer Craft School that eventually became DFAS. I remember the first time I saw her she was lifting a giant Navajo-style loom with a helper, and I was impressed with how spry she was!
I also came to know her a little more by coming to DFAS for my class. She was such a kind, loving, wonderful person who always had a smile on her face and seemed to look on the bright side of everything. I heard tales of how, in her 90s, she would drive in snowstorms to open the school so that students could come from all over. She will be missed, and I will certainly miss being greeted at DFAS with her smile.
My woven piece is inspired by her Navajo style weaving and her love of all things Navajo. My goal was to use similar colors as she did but in my own style. Because of her love for buttons, this piece was inspired by Navajo silver button designs and I have also attached a silver button to each corner. There is a red M in the center with horizontal lines that help create A's as well, incorporating Audrey's initials into the design. I had to weave from the side but was pleased with the aesthetic the side fringe contributes to the overall design.
