ATA Juror's Commendation

“What are We Building?” I want my tapestry to reflect the place and times I live in. I see two conflicting world views: build walls to keep people separate or build community. At the heart of my tapestry is the notion of construction. Unfinished construction dominates the foreground of my tapestry. What will it become and for what purpose? Portland, the “Bridge City,” has built 12 bridges across the Willamette River connecting very different neighborhoods. The longest is the Fremont Bridge, which I traveled daily to go to work.
Retirement gave Kiki Dembrow the time to realize her dream to create visual images. In 2005 she discovered the vibrant community of weavers at Damascus Fiber Arts School and tapestry became her passion. Kiki has been privileged to learn from weavers she respects and admires. Studying, exploring
and experimenting, she continues to learn and grow.
